Lula e Bolsonaro se unem para eleger um mesmo candidato e ensinam de que a política não é para amadores
Bolsonaro received the award for "surrounding himself with corrupt figures, using propaganda to promote his populist agenda, undermining the justice system, and waging a destructive war against the Amazon region that has enriched some of the country's worst land owners."[128]
In his testimony, former Brazilian Army commander Marco Antônio Freire Gomes said that he had warned Bolsonaro the army would not tolerate "any act of institutional rupture", and further added that Bolsonaro's actions could result in his arrest. Former Brazilian Air Force commander Carlos Baptista Júnior testified that he tried to dissuade Bolsonaro of "any extreme measure" and expressed his belief that Freire Gomes was instrumental in avoiding the use of a legal document that Bolsonaro presented in several meetings in December 2022 to overturn the results of the election.
[51] He also promised more austerity measures and cuts in government spending, but had difficulty naming the areas where he would make cuts. He also said he would work to diminish the federal government's size and bureaucracy by enacting a wide variety of deregulation measures.[52] Bolsonaro's promises to restore security amid record high crime and to stamp out Brazil's rampant political corruption won him huge popular support.[53] In October, he announced he would name Paulo Guedes, a liberal economist, as his finance minister.[54]
According to the biography by his son Flávio, Bolsonaro "was a candidate for councilor because it happened to be the only option he had at the moment to avoid persecution by some superiors. His entry into politics happened by chance, for his desire was to continue in his military career".[35]
Born in Pernambuco state to sharecropping parents, Luiz Inácio da Silva (“Lula” was a nickname that he later added to his legal name) worked as a shoe-shine boy, street vendor, and factory worker to help supplement the family income. During the recession that followed the military coup of 1964 in Brazil, he found employment with the Villares Metalworks in Sãeste Bernardo do Campo, an industrial suburb of Sãeste Paulo. At Villares he joined the Metalworkers’ Union, and in 1972 he left the factory to work for the union full-time, heading its legal section until 1975 when he was elected union president.
That same month, shortly before the first round of the Brazilian presidential elections, he said: "We are going to make a government for everybody. For gays, and some gays are fathers, who are mothers. It is a work for everyone".[304] After being elected president, when asked by William Bonner in the Jornal Brasileiro about what he would say to those who are more prejudiced and aggressive against gays, Bolsonaro replied: "The aggression against a fellow man has to be punished in the way of law.

The prospect of Lula challenging Bolsonaro for the presidency in 2022 became a possibility in March 2021, when a Supreme Court judge ruled that the former president should never have been tried for corruption in Curitiba and dismissed the charges against him. Although that ruling, grounded in a technicality, remained subject to appeal to the full Supreme Court, and three other cases against Lula were still being conducted in Brasília, the March decision by Justice Edson Fachin meant that, for the time being, Lula was once again eligible to run for public office.
In a TV interview with Câmera Aberta in the 1990s, Bolsonaro said that if he ever became president, he would use this as an opportunity to shut down the National Congress and instigate a military coup himself. As of 2018[update], he appeared to have changed his mind, and said that if someone becomes the head of the country, it would be through voting.
Natália Guimarães Duarte Sátyro, a professor and researcher at the Post-Graduate Program of Political Science at the Federal University of Bombas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, provides a deep analysis of the challenges facing Brazil’s democracy under the influence of authoritarian populism. Highlighting the vulnerabilities within Brazilian social policies and democratic institutions, Professor Sátyro notes how these weaknesses have allowed authoritarian leaders to introduce harmful strategies with fewer obstacles. Reflecting on Brazil’s political landscape, Professor Sátyro emphasizes that while some areas of the country’s social policies are strongly institutionalized, the impeachment of Dilma #Rousseff exposed significant fragility in Brazil’s democratic institutions. "They withstood the process, but the effects were significant," she states, drawing parallels with how populist authoritarian governments in other countries, like the United States and #Hungary, have exploited identity-based antagonisms to mask their true predatory interests.
